Can Invisalign® Treat an Overbite?
By J. Brent Gorrell on November 18, 2017
Most people who suffer from an overbite are concerned about the way it compromises the appearance of the smile. While it is normal to want an attractive smile, there are other issues related to an overbite. An overbite can have a big impact on the overall health and function of the smile, and may even result in some oral discomfort.
Invisalign® uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to apply pressure to the teeth and jaw so that the most common malocclusion problems can be corrected. Invisalign® is capable of treating many of the same problems as traditional braces, but it does so without bulky and uncomfortable metal brackets and wires.
Dr. J. Brent Gorrell is happy to discuss Invisalign® for overbite to help his Mountain View, CA patients decide if this is an appropriate treatment option for their unique situation.
Issues Related to an Overbite
When an overbite is present, the upper teeth stick out farther than the lower teeth. A slight overbite is normal, and should not be cause for concern. Overbites are measured by percentages. The percentage rating communicates what portion of the bottom teeth are covered by the upper teeth. An overbite of five to 25 percent is considered ideal, and should not require any treatment. A more severe overbite can lead to oral complications, including:
- Jaw pain
- Poor chewing habits
- Dental damage
- Speech problems
- Gum damage
Because of the health problems that can develop in patients with a significant overbite, it is important to correct this problem and bring the jaw and teeth into proper alignment.
Invisalign® is a newer technique in the world of orthodontics, but it has quickly grown in popularity. Invisalign® is effective in straightening the teeth and improving the bite, and it does so without the use of metal brackets or wires.
Throughout Invisalign® treatment, patients will progress through a series of clear, plastic aligners. Each set of aligners is shaped slightly differently, so they continually provide the pressure that is necessary to shift the teeth and jaw.
Invisalign® aligners are completely removable so that patients can eat and brush their teeth without worrying about special care instructions. Patients love that Invisalign® offers them a more comfortable and discreet treatment option, while also giving them conveniences that do not come with traditional braces.
Despite the benefits of Invisalign®, it is important that patients choose a treatment option that will work for their unique situation. An overbite is a significant malocclusion problem. Many patients wonder if the plastic Invisalign® aligners are strong enough to provide the pressure that is needed to correct an overbite. In many cases, the answer is yes.
Invisalign® is comparable to braces in many ways, and has effectively treated many cases of overbite. However, if an overbite is severe, the patient may need to consider alternative treatment, which may include braces or jaw surgery. The only way to know for sure if Invisalign® is appropriate for your unique situation is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gorrell.
