CEREC Same-day Dental Crowns
By J. Brent Gorrell on April 03, 2017
Dental crowns are one of the most effective restorative dentistry treatments that we offer to improve patients’ oral health. They offer many benefits because they can restore the health and appearance of the teeth. But, in the past, one downside of dental crowns was that they required two dental appointments, spaced one to two weeks apart, to complete treatment.
At Gorrell Dental, Dr. J. Brent Gorrell uses CEREC technology in our office so we can fit and fabricate dental crowns in a single dental appointment. Prepping Your Tooth for a Dental Crown
The first step in the dental crowns treatment process is to prep the tooth for the crown. If there is any infected or decayed tooth material, we will remove it. Once the tooth is cleaned, we will remove some of the tooth’s structure along its perimeter. This provides the space that is needed for the crown to fit over and completely encase the tooth.
Fitting and Designing Your Dental Crown
Once the tooth has been cleaned and prepped for the crown, we will take digital impressions of the tooth using the CEREC system. Digital impressions eliminate the need for messy molds, which patients bite down on for a few minutes to create an impression of the affected tooth. With digital impressions, the shape, size, and unique features of your tooth are recorded within the CEREC system; the software uses the digital impression to fabricate a custom crown that offers a precise fit.
Once the digital impressions have been recorded by the CEREC software, Dr. Gorrell will enter the design specifications into the system. This information details the color, size, and shape of the crown, so we can create a restoration that looks natural and complements your surrounding teeth and facial features.
Fabricating Your Dental Crown
Next, the CEREC CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) software will fabricate the crown from a single block of porcelain. The fabrication of the crown takes less than an hour, so your final crown restoration can be placed the same day, during a single appointment.
Placing Your Dental Crown
Once the crown has been fabricated, Dr. Gorrell will check its fit and appearance. Then, he will cement the crown in place, remove any excess cement, and polish the tooth, completing the dental crown treatment process.
Dr. Gorrell’s commitment to employing the use of the latest dental technology offers many benefits to patients. With CEREC same-day crowns, he can help patients save time and money. In addition, patients get a strong and natural-looking restoration that will last for a decade or more with proper aftercare.
