Straighten Up: Teeth Straightening Treatments
By J. Brent Gorrell on January 05, 2016
The point of cosmetic dentistry is not simply to produce the perfect smile, but to produce the smile that is perfect for you. There is a big difference between the two philosophies. If a dentist tries to sell you on the idea of the perfect smile, be very careful - because there is no such thing. There is no ideal smile that will fit neatly on every face. It doesn’t exist.
There is, however, a smile that is perfect for you. And an experienced cosmetic dentist such as Dr. J. Brent Gorrell, who combines clinical skills with a finely honed artistic eye, will invest his talents in finding the precise combination of treatments to create that smile that is uniquely, ideally yours. It wouldn’t be perfect for anyone else because nobody else has your exact teeth, lips, facial figures, and personality.
In this blog post, we are considering one component of the smile, namely the orientation of the teeth. If a person’s teeth are crooked, that person needs braces, right? Not necessarily. That’s one possibility, of course; however, there are many factors that go into determining which treatment or combination of treatments is best suited to an individual patient. Dr. Gorrell offers a variety of excellent teeth straightening treatments at his Mountain View, CA cosmetic dentistry practice, and the one that is right for one patient may not be the one that is right for you.
What Teeth Straightening Treatments Are Available?
There are a number of highly effective teeth straightening treatments available. The one that is right for you will depend on your goals, the degree of straightening needed, your budget, and other factors. A combination of methods may be employed if necessary and desired.
Available treatments include:
- Invisalign®: Invisalign® aligners are clear, removable, plastic trays that gradually guide the teeth into their optimal positions in the mouth, usually over a period of between six months and a year. They provide a discreet, comfortable, cosmetically appealing alternative to conventional metal braces. Because they are removable, patients can eat whatever they like during treatment and brush and floss with ease.
- Porcelain veneers: Porcelain veneers can be used as a sort of “instant orthodontics” when bonded to the front surfaces of mildly crooked teeth, improving their visible orientation in the mouth. At the same time, these custom-crafted porcelain restorations will also conceal other aesthetic flaws such as discoloration, cracks, chips, and gaps between teeth. Because porcelain is translucent, just like enamel, veneers look remarkably like natural teeth.
- Dental bonding: Dental bonding involves the application of a composite resin to the teeth to conceal aesthetic flaws such as minor crookedness. Bonding serves essentially the same purpose as porcelain veneers; while it is slightly less natural looking, it is also less expensive. The results are still stunningly pleasing and quite attractive.
