Providing Teens with Quality Dental Care
By J. Brent Gorrell on October 06, 2015
Today’s teenagers have a lot of responsibilities and social commitments to juggle, and in many cases, dental care isn’t at the top of their priority list. Still, most teens want to look their best, and a beautiful smile definitely plays into that equation. General dentistry services are important to the maintenance of a healthy, beautiful smile and can help teens build a foundation of quality dental care that will continue to benefit them as they age. This is why dental care for teens at our Mountain View practice continues to be a top priority for Dr. J. Brent Gorrell. Dr. Gorrell offers a full range of general and restorative density services that will allow teens to preserve good oral health and protect the aesthetics of their smile.
General Dental Care
Teens have busy lives, so the last thing they want to do is spend time at the dentist. However, teens can maintain the health of their smile by scheduling just two dental exams and cleanings each year. These cleanings provide teens with a deeper level of hygienic care than they are providing to themselves at home, while the exams allow Dr. Gorrell to diagnose any potential areas of concern. At roughly 45 minutes per exam and cleaning, even the busiest teen should make time routine, professional dental care.
To further protect the teeth, some teens may be advised to have a dental sealant applied to the teeth. Sealants are a tooth-colored acrylic that is painted over the surface of the teeth when decay or erosion is a concern. Sealants are commonly used on teen patients and can block out bacteria to prevent cavities and the need for further restorative treatment.
Restorative Dental Care
Although general dentistry services are often enough to provide teens with a healthy smile, it is common for some degree of tooth decay to occur. Many teens do not dedicate enough time to at-home oral hygiene care, or simply have not yet developed the proper oral hygiene techniques. Dr. Gorrell does offer restorative treatments to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay.
In most cases, we catch the problem before it progresses too far. Because of this, teens rarely require more than a dental filling for treatment. Dr. Gorrell offers tooth-colored fillings so that patients can restore and protect the teeth without compromising the appearance of the smile.
When patients are in their teens, the teeth are still growing and shifting. As a result, malocclusion or misalignment is a common problem among our teen patients. Dr. Gorrell offers orthodontic treatment in the form of Invisalign®. Invisalign® uses a series of clear aligner trays to gradually shift the teeth into proper alignment. Invisalign® is popular among our teen patients because the aligners are more comfortable than traditional braces, can be removed for eating, drinking, or brushing the teeth, and are barely visible to the naked eye, meaning they won’t compromise the appearance of the smile.
